The annual International Women’s Day (IWD) Awards have been established by the Inspector-General of Emergency Management (IGEM) to promote equality and diversity across the disaster management sector. The awards are open to staff and volunteers in the sector who actively champion change and demonstrate excellence.

The 2022 IWD Award categories are:
- Champion of Change
- Excellence in Disaster Management
- Research and Engagement
- Culture of Learning
Eligibility criteria
The awards are open to staff and volunteers, both women and men, in the disaster management sector. Nominees must have, within the last 12 months, demonstrated one the following award categories
Award Category 1 - Champion of Change
- Advocated for diversity and inclusion
- Demonstrated excellence in the sector
- Shown leadership as an inspirational role model
- Individuals who have had a significant impact in changing workplace culture and mindset to empower women and men to advance gender equality
- Demonstrated their commitment to mentoring emerging talent in the disaster management sector
Award Category 2 - Excellence in Disaster Management – Practitioner
- Practioners include staff and volunteers from local and state agencies and non-government agencies involved in disaster management
- Also includes Disaster Management Officers and LDMG Members, Executive Officers and District Disaster Coordinators, or Emergency Management Coordinators.
- Nominees will have demonstrated excellence in disaster management
- Showed a tangible commitment to improving the delivery of disaster management practices Introduced innovative or inclusive practices which contributed toward continuous improvement for the community and the sector
Award Category 3 - Research and Engagement
- Championed research and engagement within the disaster management sector
- Demonstrated commitment to utilising research to inform best practice
- Nomination will include an example of evidence-driven work or a disaster management project informed by research or community engagement
Award Category 4 - Culture of Learning
- Demonstrated commitment to debriefing and learning lessons within the sector
- Nominee has influenced the development of a learning culture within the disaster management sector
- This could include debriefing and surveying processes, gathering and tracking lessons identified and learned by the agency.
- Nominations are to be submitted using the nomination form
- Nominations are to be made by a primary nominator within the Queensland disaster management sector
- Nominations are to include specific example/s of how the nominee meets at least one of the eligibility criteria
- A signed e-copy or original form must be forwarded to the nominee’s manager for endorsement
- A photo of the nominee must be included
- The nominator will forward the endorsed nomination form via email to info@igem.qld.gov.au by close of business Friday, 11 February 2022.
Consideration of award nominations
The award nominations will be considered by a Selection Committee in the Office of the IGEM. The nominator of the successful applicant/s will be made aware of the outcome of the process prior to the online event.
Announcement of finalists and winners
IGEM will announce award finalists early in the 2022.
The winners of the awards will then be announced at the 2022 IWD event hosted by a committee of from across the Public Safety and Integrity Agencies network.
The IWD event will be held on Tuesday 8 March 2022. More event details will be launched early in 2022.
Award winners will also be provided with a plaque and certificate signed by the IGEM.
